Mazda 787B

Some models impress through scale. Others through nostalgia. The @lesdiy_com_official Mazda 787B, engineered by @pingubricks, impressed me through thought. It is one of the most fascinating brick-built engineering studies I’ve encountered so far, approaching the car not simply as a recognizable shape, but as a complex construction problem to be solved.

The build is demanding, unconventional and at times almost uncomfortable. Connections feel daring, alignment requires patience and the modular construction constantly challenges the builder. But that is precisely where its brilliance lies. The model refuses to be consumed passively; it asks for engagement, attention and occasionally a little trust in techniques that initially seem unlikely to work. Against all odds, those individual structures eventually come together into an incredibly accurate interpretation of one of racing’s greatest icons. It is not necessarily a relaxing build, but it is an immensely rewarding one.

While I deeply respect the legendary orange and green livery of the original Mazda 787B, I wanted to explore a quieter direction that gives the form itself more room to breathe. Starting from the white-and-blue version, I replaced many of the black elements with white ones, introduced metallic accents around the engine bay and created a custom decal set inspired by the moon. The result moves deliberately away from the character of a conventional race car replica and closer to an automotive design object. A remarkable piece of engineering, and a model that rewards both patience and curiosity. Huge respect to Pingubricks for the design and to Les DIY for turning it into such an exceptional production.
