Nordrhein-Westfalen House
John Pawson

John Pawson’s Nordrhein-Westfalen House is a quiet lesson in restraint. Rather than imposing itself on the sloping site, the house follows the natural topography, allowing the terrain to become an essential part of the architecture. What appears as a modest single-storey volume from the street gradually unfolds towards the garden, where the building steps down with the land and a cantilevered bedroom extends gently into the surrounding canopy. The architecture gains its character not by overcoming the site, but by accepting it.

ap_bricks translates this idea into bricks with remarkable architectural sensitivity. The house is not simply recreated; it is embedded into its landscape with the same respect for terrain that defines Pawson’s original design. Despite its considerable size, the model retains an unexpected lightness. Horizontal planes appear to float, transparent surfaces dissolve boundaries, and the composition reads less like a construction toy than an authentic architectural study model. It is a beautiful representation of early twenty-first century Modernism—where clarity replaces expression, proportion replaces ornament, and atmosphere emerges from precision rather than complexity.

For me, this is exactly what architectural brick models should aspire to be. It evokes the excitement of LEGO’s early Architecture series, when the ambition was to communicate architectural ideas rather than simply reproduce famous buildings. Only this time, it goes one step further.
