Toyota 2000 GT

Sometimes, the story behind a model becomes more important than the model itself. The Toyota 2000GT entered my collection that way. I had been looking for this particular brick-built interpretation for weeks when Nolan, the creator behind CleverPig, unexpectedly offered to send me one as a gift. What began as a shared appreciation for small plastic bricks had gradually turned into a friendship across borders, and suddenly a model I had been searching for arrived with an entirely different kind of value attached to it. It is easy to talk about this hobby in terms of brands, pieces, techniques and collections. Moments like this are a reminder that the most meaningful part is often none of those things. Not the plastic. Always the people.

The choice of car could hardly have been more fitting. Introduced in 1967, the Toyota 2000GT represents a remarkable moment in Japanese automotive history. Developed by Toyota with significant involvement from Yamaha, it challenged contemporary perceptions of what a Japanese sports car could be. Long, low and beautifully restrained, its proportions combine the elegance of a classic grand tourer with a distinctly Japanese sense of precision. There is very little visual noise: a long bonnet, compact cabin, delicate detailing and a silhouette that seems to become more elegant the longer you look at it. Only a few hundred examples were produced, helping turn the 2000GT into one of the most celebrated Japanese cars of its era.

PowerBuild’s interpretation captures that character with just 576 pieces. It is a relatively small model, yet the scale suits the 2000GT remarkably well. Rather than trying to reproduce every detail, the design concentrates on the elements that define the car: its flowing roofline, elongated bonnet, compact proportions and wonderfully delicate stance. That restraint is precisely what makes it convincing. At this size, every angle and transition matters, and the finished model succeeds through proportion rather than complexity. It has the quality I appreciate most in smaller builds: enough abstraction to remain unmistakably made from bricks, yet enough precision to communicate the original design immediately.

But I find it difficult to look at this particular Toyota purely as an object. It represents something larger that has become increasingly important to Stillform. I started sharing these models because I was interested in design, photography and the quiet satisfaction of building. Somewhere along the way, the hobby began connecting me with designers, builders and collectors I would otherwise never have met. Nolan is one of those people. The 2000GT therefore sits in the collection not simply because it is a beautiful interpretation of an extraordinary car, but because someone on the other side of the world remembered that I had been searching for it and decided, without expectation, to send it my way.

There are larger models here. More complicated ones. Some are technically more impressive and others took considerably longer to build. Few, however, carry quite the same meaning. The Toyota 2000GT is a small reminder that collecting objects can occasionally lead to something far less tangible and considerably more valuable: connection, generosity and friendship. The bricks are simply what brought us there.
